Growing a Social Media Audience (pt. 1)
March 27, 2020How to Make a Board Game: The Rules
April 9, 2020Last week I talked about how to create your tone for your card game. This week lets talk about how to communicate with your new audience!
Foster a Space for Your Most Dedicated Fans
How many card games and board games have you played where once you purchased the game, the company goes silent? Board games and card games are a hobby, and they foster a very committed, enthusiastic crowd that is willing to yell on top of a mountain to promote your game. You should take advantage of those kinds of fans.
We created a dedicated Card Bard discord for our community. This allows people who are passionate about Card Bard to give us real-time feedback, organize online games or talk about our love for card games in general. Our Discord users get new print and plays and related updates before anyone else. We get the benefits of additional feedback and playtest before we push it out to a broader audience. If you don’t feel like using Discord, look into Reddit or Board Game Geek!
Interact as Yourself
This idea came from Jamey Stegmaier’s book A Crowdfunders Strategy; if you haven’t read his blog or his book, you need to! If you sign up for Reddit or Board Game Geek to just promote your game, you are doing yourself more damage than good. Create relationships on these channels and then sprinkle in a little bit of info on how you are working on a card game. People don’t like straight promotion, but they are more open to it if they learn something new or have a quality conversation with you.
Your Social Media Post Should Serve a Purpose
Your social media post should serve a purpose. Like I said in the last blog showing your card games personality should be prominent in every post. So should your call to action. Don’t be random for the sake of being random. Promote your website, your print, and play (Keyan has a great article on how to make your own) or your other social channels. The goal of social media is to keep your audience in your designed ecosystem as long as you can.
Celebrate the Small Gains
All of us creators and designers tend to be wrapped up in our work that we tend to forget the obstacles and challenges we overcame. If someone you don’t know leaves you a positive comment think about that as a win! Someone took time out of their day to say something positive about your card game. For us the that moment was when one of our Instagram followers posted a picture of their print and play Card Bard set. We are based out of Dallas, Texas, and they are in Australia; that’s a fresh feeling that someone across the world is playing your game. We live in uncertain and crazy times, so take time out of your day to reflect on yourself and how far you’ve come no matter how early you are in your card game journey!
